Requirements, and updates.

Which Macs and which Windows, what needs Node.js, what needs Docker, and how the app keeps itself up to date.

Computers

  • Mac — Apple silicon (M1 and newer) and Intel, each with its own download. The app is signed and notarized with Apple.
  • Windows — one installer, which installs into your own profile with no administrator prompt and starts the app when done. It is not yet signed, so Windows shows its "unknown publisher" warning once; the download page sends the build by email until it is.

What needs nothing

A folder of HTML: add it, see it, publish it. No account for the preview, a Netlify or Vercel account for publishing.

What needs Node.js

A project with a build step — Vite, Astro, Eleventy, Create React App, Gatsby, anything with a build script — and a project that runs through its own dev script. The app uses the Node.js and npm on your computer, through your own shell, so a version manager you set up counts. Without one, the Publishing page says so and offers the install, which the app runs for you.

An AI tool connected over MCP also runs the app's server under your Node.js.

What needs Docker

WordPress and PHP. Docker Desktop is free; on Windows the app installs and starts it, on a Mac it links to the download. More →

Updates

The app checks for a new version quietly every few hours, downloads it, and announces it once the new version is on disk: a band across the window and the version in the corner, with one Restart now. Dismissing the band is for that version only. On a Mac the new version replaces the old on restart; on Windows the installer runs in one press. Settings → Check for updates asks straight away, and offers the download link for this build's own architecture if the check cannot run.

What is in each version is on the changelog.
